It’s incredibly common for couples to say, “I hate being in front of the camera,” or “My partner is really camera shy.” If that sounds like you, you’re not alone—and it’s totally normal to feel that way. As a candid wedding photographer, I specialize in helping camera shy couples feel comfortable on their wedding day so we can capture natural moments, genuine emotions, and great photos without any stiff poses. In this post, I’m sharing my top tips for relaxed wedding photography that tells your love story beautifully—even if being in front of the camera isn’t your favourite thing. And maybe, by the end of reading, you may even feel that I’m the right photographer for your big day!
Our photography style is candid photography, which is very movement based and perfect for those a little more nervous for their photo shoot. If you feel lost, or stuck, we will give you something to do that involves movement. Movement really is the key to overcoming camera shy wedding photos. We never want you to feel like a barbie doll, posed limb by limb. So instead, we give little challenges like “Kiss her on the cheek as many times as you can in 10 seconds!”. This allows you to relax in front of a camera, while we have you do something that we know will look great. Sometimes the movement will be bigger, like a twirl or holding hands and walking towards the camera. Other times, it will be a more subtle movement, like swaying back and forth and taking a few deep breaths. Whether the vibe we’re going for is loud and energetic, or quiet and intimate, we’ve got you covered!
It’s rare that we ever work with models. What does this mean? We’re working with people just like you! Who also don’t know how to pose, may be self conscious and almost all of them don’t know where to put their hands. We don’t expect you to know what to do, that’s what we’re there for!
This means that we act with kindness and put your comfort first! We want to be able to know how to make you feel confident and comfortable. Whether it’s a family session, engagement session, couples portraits, or wedding pictures, we want you to feel like a million bucks!
We work to make you feel comfy, and then give you space to forget that we’re even there. This is because we want to capture the essence of your partnership during your photo session. NOT copy and paste a bunch of different poses. You’ll notice that we give direction when needed, but also give space for you to breathe and be yourselves.
Focus on each other, don’t say cheese, and trust your photographer!
Focus on your posture, don’t be afraid to embrace your emotions (laugh, cry etc) and keep moving. Subtle swaying or hand movement make for amazing photos.
