Taylor and Curtis had originally planned a big traditional wedding in 2020. But, as plans changed and the world shifted, they began to reflect on what truly mattered to them. What did they want from their wedding day? The answer was simple: intimacy, authenticity, and a setting that felt like a dream. That’s how their Emerald Lake Natural Bridge elopement came to life — a quiet, romantic escape in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.
Like many couples, Taylor and Curtis were forced to pivot during the pandemic. With guest lists, vendors, and expectations piling up, the couple realized that a big celebration just didn’t feel like them anymore. Instead, they embraced the idea of an intimate elopement — one filled with intentional moments and breathtaking views, and stress-free compared to a traditional wedding.
Choosing Yoho National Park in British Columbia, just a short drive from Banff, Canmore and Calgary, Alberta, was a no-brainer. They were drawn to the park’s natural beauty, and especially to the Natural Bridge near Emerald Lake, a stunning rock formation carved by glacial water over centuries. This hidden gem created the perfect backdrop for their elopement ceremony.
Despite it being spring, the Rocky Mountains were still covered in a blanket of snow, giving the day a magical, wintry charm. The air was crisp, but the sun kept everyone warm — including Taylor, who braved the outdoors without a jacket.
One of the benefits of an elopement is flexibility. Without a strict timeline or large guest count, couples can scout out the perfect spot for their vows — considering things like lighting, foot traffic, and weather. For Taylor and Curtis, this meant choosing a quiet bend of the river with turquoise water and majestic mountains as their ceremony site. With their officiant by their side, they shared vows in an incredibly private, serene moment.
After their heartfelt elopement ceremony, it was time to celebrate. The couple popped a bottle of champagne, had their first dance right in the snow, and shared plenty of laughter. We captured these authentic, joyful moments with a candid approach to elopement photography, focusing on their love story and the emotion of the day.
From there, we took a short drive to Emerald Lake, another icon within Yoho National Park. Though the lake was still frozen over, the surrounding snow-covered mountains were absolutely stunning. And let’s not forget: their matching socks added a pop of fun and personality that made their elopement photos even more memorable!
To end their perfect day, we returned to Emerald Lake Lodge, a rustic log cabin retreat nestled in the mountains. Their cottage held special meaning for the couple, and we documented their quiet moments together there — along with a few sweet photos of their dogs, who were very much a part of the celebration.
