So, you’ve found the love of your life, and you’re all set to take the plunge into married life. You’ve got your heart set on having your best friend by your side, not just as a guest, but as someone who’s truly a part of your special day. But what if you don’t want to go through the hassle of making your friend apply to be a marriage commissioner? Don’t worry, we’ve got a fun alternative that will make your wedding day uniquely yours! Here’s how to have your friend officiate your wedding in British Columbia.
Picture this: your friend, who knows you inside out, stands before you, sharing heartfelt words, and helping you exchange those precious vows. It’s a beautiful moment, but the legal side of things needs a bit of extra magic. That’s where a creative solution comes in! Your friend can still play a big role in your ceremony, almost like an officiant. They can run the show, add that personal touch, and make your ceremony feel like you.
After you two share your first kiss and walk back down the aisle, it’s time for a small change of scene. You, your partner, a couple of witnesses, and a legal officiant can gather privately for a short legal ceremony. This part takes care of all the legal nitty-gritty and makes your marriage officially recognized by the law.
So, why is this alternative such a cool idea? Well, for starters, it lets your friend’s words and presence be a big part of your big day. They can share stories, funny anecdotes, and all the things that make your bond unique. Plus, it’s like getting the best of both worlds – the personal touch of a friend-led ceremony and the official stamp of approval from the law. And the best part is that here are no hoops for your friend to jump through to make it legal, making it easy to know how to have your friend officiate your wedding in British Columbia.
Remember, your wedding day is all about creating memories that you’ll cherish forever. Having your friend involved in a meaningful way, coupled with a little legal twist, ensures that your day is not just special but also uniquely reflective of your personalities and relationship.
So, if you’re in BC, Canada, and you thought your friend couldn’t be a part of your ceremony, think again! With this fun and creative alternative, you can have the best of both worlds – a heartwarming ceremony led by your friend and a short legal ceremony to make everything official. It’s all about making your wedding day as special and unique as the love you share.

Having a “make it legal ceremony” is certainly great for those couples that either have someone that is great at public speaking and also are wanting to pay less for an officiant or marriage commissioner. I have done a few of these over the years as a marriage officiant, one in a book store/coffee shop and a few in the couples home. I think the big thing to consider is will the friend be open to what you want said and will they be able to speak clearly and slowly enough so all can hear and understand. Plus will they have the time to put the effort into creating the “perfet’ ceremony? All questions to consider.
